The Nipika Paddle and Hike trip will be based at Nipika Lodge. Spend the first two days doing some wonderful hikes. Mitchell Ridge starts with an ascent along the border of Kootenay National Park. Reaching treeline fairly quickly, you start to get panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Passing through larch stands and onto the craggy ridges, see famous Mt. Assiniboine in the distance.
On the second day, you can either hike the Cochrane Creek route or enjoy a more leisurely amble around the trails at Nipika. On the third day, take a wonderful day canoe/kayak trip in the Columbia wetlands.
This will feature bird watching and exploring this unique natural environment. Each of these nights, return to the lodge for a hot tub or sauna, hearty dinner and relaxing conversation around the fireplace.
The next day, head out for a three-day paddle on the Kootenay River. You will run the most scenic and exciting section, between McLeod Meadows and Canal Flats. Easy Class I and II whitewater is appropriate for the novice to intermediate paddler. You will be using SOAR inflatable canoes, which add to the safety and allow less skilled paddlers to enjoy this route. Along the way, see bald eagles soaring overhead, perhaps spot a wolf on the shoreline, and see unique natural features such as tufa deposits and wind and water-sculpted hoodoos. During the canoe trip, camp out on the river.
Each evening, enjoy a scenic campsite, hearty, home-cooked meal and relax under the starry skies.
