Overnight Trip Options:
Horseback Riding – Pack Trip
The trip starts from the Little Elbow Campground in the Little Elbow Valley west of Bragg Creek. An experienced outfitter takes the guests into the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains for an overnight trip. The riding is usually on narrow and sometimes steep trails, however can be adjusted to the level of the riders. Overnight is at a camp consisting of wall tents, and meals are prepared on the open fire. The evenings are spent sitting around the fire, telling stories and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. With a bit of luck, wildlife such as grizzlies, moose, elk and deer can be seen. The guests return to the campground in the afternoon of the second day.
Hiking in Elbow Valley/Kananaskis Country
An abundance of hiking trails and splendid mountain vistas await the avid hiker. Under the guidance of an experienced naturalist guide, the guests have the opportunity to learn about flora and fauna of the Rocky Mountains. The night is spent in trapper’s tents. The next day the guests have more time to explore the fantastic mountains and will return in the afternoon (required are a minimum three people).
Mountain Biking – The Elbow Classic
The Elbow Loop is quite famous among mountain biking enthusiasts. The trail follows both the Big Elbow and the Little Elbow River and takes you up to the Tombstone Pass from where further explorations can be done. The night is spent in trapper’s tents. The second day is spent completing the loop, which takes you back to the Little Elbow campground (required are a minimum three people).
Full-Day Trip Options:
Horseback Riding
Be a cowboy for a day! There are three locations available for day rides: Little Elbow Campground, M & M Ranch Bragg Creek or Wintergreen Resort in Bragg Creek. The full-day ride includes a lunch along the trail.
Hiking
This is probably the most natural approach to experiencing the nature. The options for hiking are endless and the exact location of the hike can be determined depending on the weather as well as the interest of the guests. Lunch is included.
Mountain Biking – Kananaskis Cruiser
Again there are many options available from easy to very challenging bike rides in the area of Kananaskis Country. Lunch is included.
Half-Day Trip Options:
River Rafting
The rafting would take place either on the Elbow or on the Kananaskis River, both in grade 2–3. Those are ideal rivers for leisurely floats down the river where the guests have time to enjoy the scenery and to listen to some stories. Lunch is included.
Caving
Alberta Rockies caves are dark and mysterious. They are “wild” caves and have not been developed in any way. The cave is 5C (40F) all year round, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Explored and mapped passageways measure over four kilometers, making it the eighth longest cave in Canada. |
| Accommodations |
The package is offered in three different price categories, depending on the class of accommodation:
High End
Accommodations are in a good middle class hotel in Canmore or an upper class hotel in Calgary. Canmore offers a lot of good restaurants and entertainment for the evenings and is only a 15-minute drive from the town of Banff. For the activities based in Bragg Creek and Little Elbow Valley, it is actually closer to stay in Calgary. Bragg Creek unfortunately does not have any hotels. It is also possible to stay in Calgary first and then move on to Canmore.
Moderate
Accommodations are in a Bed & Breakfast in either Canmore or Bragg Creek. The B&Bs worked with are all excellent with very friendly and helpful hosts. The advantage of staying in a B&B is that the breakfast is provided.
Economy
Accommodations are on campgrounds. All necessary equipment will be supplied, such as tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and cooking equipment. The client is responsible for finding a campsite and paying the camping fee, which is usually between $10-$15 per night. |
