Overview
"All Hike Maui guides seem to be encyclopedias in hiking boots." Honolulu Magazine: May, 1996
In 1983, when Ken Schmitt started Hike Maui, it was the first and only hiking company in the state. At the time, walking into the wilderness was not a popular idea. Still, Ken forged ahead - he had a mission to show people the "real" Hawai'i. His fledgling company struggled for 11 years with only one employee - himself. Fortunately, guidebook authors discovered Hike Maui, and it was a real find: a unique company with an owner who knew what he was talking about. Guidebook after guidebook called Ken "a walking encyclopedia", and the reputation stuck. Ken's reputation became synonymous with Hike Maui's. And, today, it's still Hike Maui's foundation. People expect Hike Maui to deliver the best.
In the early 1990s, ecotourism took off and Hike Maui was already grandfathered in as the leader of the pack. Ken's one-man show gained such popularity that now Hike Maui has 15 to 20 guides plus a variety of trips to choose from.
What makes Hike Maui still stand in the lead are these guides. It is their obligation to continue Ken's excellence. Hike Maui's naturalists weave botany, ethno-botany, geology, history, and culture into the adventure of hiking.
Ah yes, hiking ... waterfalls, rainforests, jungles, mountains, volcanoes, ocean cliffs. It's hard to beat hiking in Maui.
"Among the most incredible adventures to be experienced on Maui ..." Maui A Paradise Guide
With such a longstanding presence on the island, Hike Maui is able to go where others cannot. They are the only tour company that has private trails to private waterfalls and pools. Maui is full of waterfalls, but few are accessible to visitors. As a result, Hike Maui's waterfall and rainforest hikes are their most popular.
But there are other areas that should also not be missed - Haleakala Crater heads that list. Or, a combination tour of hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and waterfalls is great. Or, you can pick from a number of adventures and Hike Maui will do a customized trip.
Hike Maui is the oldest, most experienced hiking company in the state. Let the experts take you into the Hawai'i of your dreams.
