Overview
Natura Cabañas was born in 1996; it was Pablo and Lole’s idea, a couple from Chile that arrived in Dominican Republic to create a place where nature meets the spirit. Natura Cabañas is part of the ecotourism defined as: ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation. The flora and fauna are mixed with the rustic architecture of the palm-thatched roof cabañas. The sound of the waves from the nearby beach is mixed with the songbirds making rounds between the passion fruit and citrus trees. This oceanfront eco-paradise offers eleven bungalows with names such as Africana, Laja, Coral and Piedra, each of them unique and built using natural and local materials like caoba, bamboo, coral and artistic stonework with seductive illumination and under the concepts of Feng Shui. Some accommodations feature kitchenette, with one, two or three bedrooms. The central swimming pool, surrounded by coconut trees, invites the guest and for those who prefer the beach, it’s just a few steps away, passing through the two seafront restaurants. One serves healthy breakfast with natural fruit, juices and nutritious lunches, and the other one with international gourmet cuisine dinners. For the body, the new artistically designed SPA Attabeyra (the goddess of waters in the Dominican culture) offers all type of treatments such as massages, facials, mud or chocolate wraps, reflexology and steam baths in the unmistakable “Hongo”. For the spiritual growth enjoy the Yoga Temple “Templo del Saber”, a spectacular oceanfront construction with no walls and a polished wood floor, the perfect place for uplifting the spirit, practicing yoga, meditation and other alternative activities. Think of Natura Cabañas as a base camp - a place to relax, renew and re-energize before or after your adventure trips around Dominican Republic. It is the right atmosphere to maximize your mental momentum and reconnect with your inner self.
If you like adventure trips, there are many possibilities in Dominican Republic. If you're a whitewater fan, go whitewater rafting or kayaking during rainy season (winter) and decide whether you want Class II-III rapids (small-moderate) or III-IV (moderate-difficult). The Rio Yaque is the longest river in the Caribbean and offers both challenging and easy stretches. It includes cute features like "Mike Tyson", a 12-foot vertical drop and "The Cemetery", a difficult stretch of rocks sticking up like tombstones, but also offers meandering curves of calmer water for easy drifting.
Another adrenaline-filled day trip is a climb through the many nearby waterfalls. You'll hike, pull yourself up others using a line to haul yourself against the torrent of water. The way down ranges from natural rock "slides" through jumps into crystal pools to rappelling down the face of the waterfall itself. Outfitters equip you with helmets, full-body wetsuits, and a guide simply dripping with ropes and pitons to lead you. The best places to climb waterfalls are Cascada del Limón, Cascada Ojo de Agua, El Salto de Baiguate and El Salto de Jimenoa.
The mountain of Pico Duarte, at almost 9,000 feet, is the highest mountain in the Caribbean, and a typical trek up and down takes three days of serious hiking. Guided treks usually include all food for the three days, sleeping bags, burros to carry gear and provisions, as well as a local guide.
There are an astonishing variety of dive sites around the island. Reefs, wrecks, caverns and abundant marine life make the island a Mecca for novices and experienced divers alike. Great spots include Cabrera (freshwater cave with an underground lake) and La Caleta National Underwater Park.
The area boasts incredible mountain bike tours. While traveling through some of the most scenic and unspoiled mountains in the world, the journey will take you to heights of 5,500 feet. The hospitality of the Dominican campesinos quickly becomes evident as you cycle through their charming villages. Combining diverse and panoramic landscape with unique accommodations, this is truly a cyclist's paradise.
Kiteboarding is the hottest new water sport on the planet and Cabarete matches with it perfectly. This small Caribbean town has the reputation of having the most fantastic kitesurfing conditions in the world. Accordingly, some of the greatest in this sport have chosen Cabarete as their regular training camp to practice the sport all year round.
Windsurfers have been visiting Cabarete since the mid 80s because of the fantastic conditions available for every level of sailor. Cabarete has played host to numerous world-class events. Every June, it hosts Cabarete Race Week, an international windsurfing competition that incorporates exciting windsurfing competition and a ton of fun!
The North Coast of the Dominican Republic is one of the best-kept secrets in the surfing world. Safe, clear, warm water, and clean, uncrowded waves make this area excellent for surfing and body/boogie boarding. Playa Encuentro (near Cabarete), Playa Grande and Playa Preciosa (near Rio San Juan) and Playa Boba (near Nagua), are good surfing spots for beginners, as well as those looking for something a more challenging.
