Overview
New Zealand Travellers provides walking tours of New Zealand, concentrating on the South Island. Established in 1985, they continue to offer non-commercial, non-touristy, tasteful, small-group walking tours of New Zealand's South Island for discerning, nature lovers. This is the tour for you if you enjoy comfortable day hiking in the wilderness of New Zealand! You will enjoy beautiful accommodations, fine cuisine served by candlelight, and the leadership of Jan King who took the business over in 2007.
Jan King originated from the UK and has traveled extensively around New Zealand. She first immigrated to New Zealand in 1985 and lived in the North Island, near Wellington, for four years before returning to the UK. In 2003, Jan traveled to NZ for a holiday, loved it so much and finally emigrated with her partner, Steve in October 2003. Her partner and associate, Steve, keeps the home fires burning while Jan is away on tour and they have two boxer dogs, Henry and Zac who are very sociable! They also run Cable Bay Bed and Breakfast.
Founder/Director Alan Riegelman traveled to the South Island in 1984 to fish for trout, and then spent an entire year roaming and backpacking in the backcountry before becoming a NZ citizen and founding New Zealand Travellers. Right from the start, he determined that New Zealand Travellers tours should be like family outings to off-the-beaten path locations and not simply unimaginative coach tours to the same old, tired tourist attractions. For example, among other fascinating places, they'll take you to their secret Fiordland Crested Penguin bay and a hidden mountain forest of towering trees that are more than 1,000 years old.
New Zealand Travellers does only New Zealand hiking tours, unlike other tour companies with a long list of destinations. They assiduously avoid touristy locations and over-crowded, over-publicized tourist attractions.
Good Food and Tasteful Accommodations are Crucial New Zealand Travellers menus feature fresh fish, rack of lamb, thick steaks, and the South Island's fantastic fresh veggies. Stay in B&Bs and beachfront motels, most of which have hosted New Zealand Travellers groups for many years. For two nights, the group has an entire ski lodge to themselves, hot tub and all.
Nothing Succeeds Like Success! New Zealand Travellers has pleased more than 1,500 clients since 1986 with their "far from the madding crowd", real backcountry, 14-day walking tours. Ask their last season customers about them. New Zealand Travellers will give you some names and addresses.
