A la Carte Explorer Costa Rica Tours - Rainforest Route

Bats! The kids loved them. Making chocolate from ground cacao was more my style. Then we sampled it. Wow! Watching the mother turtles dig their nests at night on the beach we felt like we were in the presence of something much greater than ourselves. We will never forget Costa Rica.

These are private A la Carte style programs for those seeking relaxed touring, more free time with fewer included tours, good quality locally owned hotels and lodges at excellent prices. Two itineraries, "The Volcano Route" and "The Rainforest Route", show different aspects of life in Costa Rica. They can be combined to make one longer tour.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival San Jose
Arrive San Jose and transfer with driver to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 2,3: Sarapiqui
Transfer from San Jose to Sarapiqui in the lowland Caribbean rainforest. At this lodge you can also choose to go on many optional (not included) tours such as river rafting, rainforest walks, canopy zipline adventure, natural history programs, river wildlife watching and more. (B)

Day 4: Sarapiqui Chocolate Tour
Today includes a chocolate tour at a former cacao-tree plantation. Upon reaching the plantation, a TRC guide will reveal the secrets of transforming cacao fruit into chocolate. You’ll see the chocolatemaking process first-hand and even have the opportunity to treat your taste buds to organic rainforest chocolate! Early evening, you will have a multi-media presentation on the history of bats, their classification system, diversity, adaptations, reproduction methods, threats, and more. And, for the most popular part of the Bat Tour, a trained guide will provide a safe opportunity to touch, feed and release safely captured bats. You can also take a short guided walk to see the mist nets used to gently catch these creatures. (BD)

Day 5: Sarapiqui - Tortuguero National Park
This morning you’ll transfer by land to a coastal estuary for a boat trip to Tortuguero. Then you will be taken to your lodge. This area exists to protect the most important breeding areas in Costa Rica for marine turtles. Of the eight worldwide species, four nest here. You can see leatherback turtles between April and June and green turtles from July to mid October. (BLD)

Day 6: Tortuguero National Park
This morning you will board a flat bottom boat to explore the watery creeks and canals that make up the highly productive coastal zone of the Caribbean lowlands with an expert guide. On this trip you will see an incredible assortment of tropical wildlife before returning to your lodge. Balance of day is free. (BLD)

Day 7: Tortuguero - San Jose
Today you will transfer back to San Jose for the conclusion of this package. (B)
